I'm planning to buy my first compact tractor and was wondering if it would be cost effective to sew winter rye in the horse pastures myself. What type/brand/size of overseeder (is this the right implement?) would be good and how much does one cost. I have about 14 acres; my neighbor has 20 acres and might be willing to split the cost of one. Would 21-25 hp be enough to pull one of these over level terrain.Thanks.

Willy,
When I looked at overseeders they ran in the $6,000 - $8,000 dollar range, with used ones running about half that. This was for units about 6 ft. wide to pull behind a NH TC-40D. I have seen units for rent on the Internet but have not found any in my area, so plan "B" is to rent a core aerator to punch holes in the pasture and then plant using the broadcast seeder ($500) and chain harrow ($350) I already have. We planted winter rye as a cover crop last fall just using the broadcast seeder and chain harrow and it came up great. ....

I was planning on breaking up the top with the scarifiers on my box blade, spread the seed and then go over with a drag I constructed with chain link and 2x8s. Do you think this will work? ....
